US Congressman Michael McCaul pushes Biden to expand Ukraine’s use of US weapons

The head of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Policy of the American Congress, Michael McCaul, is trying to convince the country’s President Joe Biden to allow Ukraine to launch attacks with American weapons not only on the regions of the Russian Federation located near the Kharkiv region but also throughout the rest of Russian territory, according to US Congress’ Foreign Affairs official website.

Congressman Michael McCaul is lobbying Biden to allow Ukraine to use American weapons to strike other parts of Russia, in addition to the territory of the Russian Federation near the Kharkiv region.

The media learned that the other day McCall sent a letter to Biden with a story that on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue conference in Singapore, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky complained to him and other legislators that with the current US ban on the use of a number of weapons – in particular, ATACMS missiles – Ukraine cannot effectively defend Kharkiv.

According to McCaul, the restriction is contrary to the intent of Congress and should be immediately reconsidered. The congressman believes that the missiles could be used to strike targets in the Russian Federation that “support the offensive” and airfields where Russian aircraft are located.

Earlier, on May 23, The New York Times reported, citing unnamed officials, that the US State Department had made similar requests to Biden. The newspaper’s columnists noted that at the initiative of the State Department, the administration is now engaged in lively discussions about relaxing the ban on the use of American weapons in Russia to allow Ukrainians to carry out strikes on the other side of the border with Russia. According to them, this proposal was made by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. His position on this issue, according to sources, was previously different but has changed due to the successes of Russian forces in Ukraine.
