MOSCOW – Russian air defense forces intercepted and destroyed 71 fixed-wing Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles overnight, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday morning.
The drones were shot down between 8 p.m. Moscow time on July 4 and 7 a.m. Moscow time on July 5, an eleven-hour window covering the full overnight period. The Defense Ministry reported intercepts over the Belgorod, Bryansk, and Rostov regions, the Republic of Crimea, and the Black Sea.

The overnight figure of 71 continues a pattern of large-scale Ukrainian drone campaigns targeting Russian regions across a broad geographic spread. Belgorod Oblast, bordering Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, has been among the most frequently struck Russian border areas during the Russian operation. Bryansk and Rostov oblasts have been targeted regularly, and Crimea has remained a persistent objective for Ukrainian long-range strike activity throughout the conflict. Russia has in turn escalated its own drone offensive, with Euronews reporting that Moscow is now deploying jet-powered variants around the clock to overwhelm Ukrainian interceptor supplies.
The Defense Ministry did not report ground damage or casualties in connection with the overnight intercepts. Not all drones that entered Russian airspace were necessarily aimed at populated areas; Ukrainian drone campaigns have targeted radar systems, fuel depots, air defense installations, and airfields in addition to civilian infrastructure. The absence of a damage report in the ministry’s statement does not confirm that no impacts occurred; the ministry’s overnight intercept reports typically account for what was shot down rather than what was not. Diplomatic efforts to end the broader conflict remain ongoing, with US envoys Witkoff and Kushner saying they remain ready to visit Moscow to continue Ukraine peace mediation.
