Oklahoma still had a chance to rescue a one-point game when John Mateer threw over the middle. Jordan Castell took the pass the other way for a 41-yard touchdown, turning Kentucky’s narrow lead into the cushion it needed to leave Norman with a 21–13 win Saturday night.

The interception return, with 1:17 remaining, captured the difference between the teams. Oklahoma outgained Kentucky 346–230 and allowed only two offensive touchdowns. The Sooners nevertheless lost the turnover battle 4–0, surrendering the possessions that their defense could not recover for them. Oklahoma’s official recap documents the yardage advantage and Castell’s decisive return.

A week after Oklahoma’s last-play victory over Texas, the Sooners fell to 3–3 overall and 1–2 in the Southeastern Conference. No. 15 Kentucky improved to 6–1 and 4–1, extending its winning streak to five games.

Four interceptions, but not all from Mateer

Mateer finished 24-of-40 for 270 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions. Kentucky’s fourth interception came from holder Jacob Ulrich on a fake field goal, a distinction that matters when assigning responsibility for Oklahoma’s lost scoring opportunities.

That fake ended with Castell intercepting in the end zone. Later, Ty Bryant’s interception of a tipped pass gave Kentucky possession at Oklahoma’s 45 while the Wildcats trailed 13–7, according to Kentucky’s official recap. Kenny Minchey turned that opening into a 12-yard touchdown pass to Willie Rodriguez and a 14–13 lead.

Kentucky Football’s official account shared the Minchey–Rodriguez touchdown:

The wider conference picture shifted with Georgia’s defeat by Auburn. Kentucky’s victory pulled it level with Georgia at 4–1 in SEC play, according to The Associated Press’ game report. That is a standings consequence, not a playoff berth.

A defensive effort without enough protection

Oklahoma held Kentucky to 158 passing yards and 72 rushing yards. Freshman defensive lineman Jake Kreul recorded 2.5 sacks, which the university says is the most by a true freshman in school history. The performance kept a struggling offense within reach of a result it could still change late.

Manny Choice, making his first career start, caught five passes for 98 yards. Isaiah Sategna III added eight receptions for 83, while Rocky Beers caught Oklahoma’s only touchdown, a 20-yard pass shortly before halftime. None of that production yielded another touchdown after the break.

Oklahoma’s next trip is to Mississippi State on October 24. Its later schedule also includes Florida, another team coming off a win over Texas. The Texas result remains a significant win for the Sooners; Saturday showed why it did not resolve their offensive problems.

ESPN College Football’s official game highlights:

Kentucky returns home to face Vanderbilt. The Wildcats’ place in the next poll was not settled by Saturday’s finish, despite a weekend already producing new projections at the top of the rankings. What they had secured was more concrete: another road win, and four takeaways in a game their offense did not control.
