Finland has officially become the 31st country in NATO, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said. The official statement from the Alliance representative will be later, according to Kommersant.
“Now there are 31 countries in the alliance. Strong partners are a guarantee of the security of Poland, the region and the whole world,” Marowecki wrote on Twitter, and congratulated the country on joining.
Finland and Sweden applied to join the North Atlantic Alliance in May last year. Their decision was prompted by a special military operation that Russia is carrying out on the territory of Ukraine. Sweden continues to await membership approval from Turkey and Hungary.
Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said NATO would not deploy troops to Finland after it entered without the country’s consent. The Russian Foreign Ministry, in turn, has already promised to take retaliatory measures to reduce threats.
Earlier, IA DEITA.RU reported that Russia may receive 300 billion for Finland’s entry into NATO.
