Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Journalists confirmed the death of more than 20,000 Russian soldiers in Ukraine

As of April 14, it was possible to confirm the death of 20,451 Russian soldiers in the war with Ukraine. This casualty data is provided by journalists from the BBC Russian Service in conjunction with Mediazona and a team of volunteers. They note that in the past two weeks, 1,820 military personnel have been confirmed dead, which is the highest number since the start of the war.

According to journalists, prisoners and mercenaries of the Wagner PMC, who are fighting in the Bakhmut region, suffer the greatest losses. In total, they managed to establish the names of 3080 convicts who died in Ukraine. Since March, the number of confirmed casualties among prisoners has exceeded the number of casualties among other categories of participants in the war.

A high number of victims among those mobilized is also reported. Journalists managed to establish the death of 1900 of these servicemen. It is noted that 60% of them died after January 1 of this year. There are also known 53 mobilized people who died on the territory of Russia in military units and collection points.

Journalists note that a third of all casualties are attributable to volunteers, mobilized, prisoners and mercenaries.

Journalists collect information on dead Russian servicemen since the beginning of hostilities. The surveillance only includes people whose deaths have been established on the basis of open sources. The actual number of losses, according to the study authors, could be much higher. Moreover, the journalists do not know the number of missing and captured.

The Russian Ministry of Defense does not disclose data on personnel losses and does not comment on the figures given by journalists. The Ukrainian authorities do not communicate either on the number of dead soldiers.

According to estimates by Western intelligence, the loss of the Russian army in dead and wounded can reach 200,000 people – up to 60,000 of them could die.

The Pentagon said in November that Russian and Ukrainian casualties on both sides were estimated at 100,000 each; Washington’s doubling of ratings was not commented on.
