Sowing and sowing
The main task of the nursery of the state budgetary institution “Directorate of Specially Protected Natural Territories of Regional Importance of the City of Sevastopol and Forestry” is to grow seedlings of forest crops.
The main attention is paid to Pitsunda pine (Stankevich), Crimean pine (Palassa), but work with cypresses and thujas gives excellent results. From deciduous crops, walnuts, almonds, Magaleb cherry (antipka cherry), acacia, honey locust and narrow-leaved silver goof are grown.
- The process of growing seedlings is laborious and takes more than a year, – explains the head of the nursery and reforestation department, Yuri Plakhtiy. – First you need to collect the seeds of elite trees (large and healthy), stratify them, sow them on prepared beds. After successful growth, seedlings should be transplanted to a new site and grow seedlings from it.
Before planting forest areas, special soil preparation is carried out using a cultivator. One year later, the seedling survival rate is monitored. A part of the plants under the influence of the anthropogenic factor, animal damage or weather conditions should be replaced. Even 25% rooted seedlings is considered a good result. This is where the step of completing the culture to the desired 100% comes. You can not drive a tractor in a clearing, the work is done only manually. The main tools are a shovel, a hoe, Kolesov’s sword.
There are also cedar and yew berry seedlings in the nursery. These trees are used to decorate open spaces in the city. Their crowns reach up to 30 meters in diameter. Exotics feel great in the conditions of the Crimea. This is just the main advantage of the tree, its magnificent crown, turns into trouble. It is because of the crown that such seedlings are rarely ordered today. Officials save space when developing a landscaping plan. But in vain!
