The Moscow City Court left Evan Gershkovich, a journalist with the American edition of the Wall Street Journal accused of espionage, in a remand center.
“The trial court’s decision on the election of a measure of restraint in the form of detention to Gershkovich should remain unchanged,” the judge said.
In addition, the defense complaint also remained unsatisfied. US Ambassador to Russia Lynn Tracy attended the meeting.
The defendant’s lawyer, Tatyana Nozhkina, after the hearing said that the defense offered to release Gershkovich on bail of 50 million rubles, but the court refused. Nozhkina also said the WSJ reporter does not admit guilt and is ready to prove it.
Earlier, the Wall Street Journal wrote that Washington was ready to find creative solutions to reach an agreement to release American citizens Paul Whelan and Evan Gershkovich convicted in Russia of espionage. According to the source, the White House is trying to find a solution that will respect the law.
