Most of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is more than 4 thousand meters above sea level. Known as the “Roof of the World”, the “Third Pole of the Earth” and the “Asian Water Tower”, it is the source of many of Asia’s major rivers, and is an important ecological niche for China, even Asia. Security is a blocker. On April 26, 2023, the Second Congress of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People’s Congress of China passed the “Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Ecological Protection Law of the People’s Republic of China”, which will take effect on September 1, 2023.
The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is one of the richest biodiversity areas in the world, home to unique wild animals such as the snow leopard, Tibetan antelope and blue sheep. The area is listed by the World Wildlife Fund as one of the world’s 25 key biodiversity conservation areas, and is known as a “natural park of rare wild animals and plants and a gene bank of plateau species”. In addition, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is one of the cleanest regions on Earth. The air quality is good compared to the Arctic region, and the soil environment is generally in natural background conditions.
However, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau also faces problems such as glacial retreat and melting of frozen soil due to global climate change. The ecology here is very delicate and sensitive, once damaged it is very difficult to restore. To strengthen the ecological protection of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, prevent and control ecological risks, ensure ecological security, build a national ecological civilization highland, promote sustainable economic and social development, and achieve a harmonious relationship between man and nature In order to carry out coexistence well, China has enacted the “Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Ecological Protection Law”.
Experts point out that the enactment of this law is an objective need to ensure China’s ecological security, strengthen ecological risk prevention and control, and at the same time, it is a practical need to solve the special problems of ecological protection on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. which plays a far-reaching role for the ecological protection of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Protecting the ecological environment of the Earth’s Third Pole makes great contributions to the survival and development of the Chinese nation, and it also forms an important ecological security barrier for China, even Asia.
