Japan: High alert issued in earthquake affected Japan

Tokyo. Japan’s Ishikawa Prefecture was on Saturday on a high alert for aftershocks and rain following a 6.5-magnitude earthquake on Friday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned that after the initial tremor on Friday afternoon, there could be more aftershocks over a period of about a week. The earthquake was recorded above 6 on the Japanese Richter scale in the city of Suzu on the Noto Peninsula. Friday’s earthquake in Suzu killed a 65-year-old man and injured 22 others after falling from a ladder.

More than 50 earthquakes have been recorded in the region as of 8 a.m. local time, including a 5.8-magnitude quake on Friday evening, the JMA said. The weather agency said 30 earthquakes hit the province from Saturday evening to early Sunday. Rain could fall up to millimeters per hour, while up to 120 mm of rain is expected in the Noto region in the 24 hours to 6 a.m. Sunday. Landslide warnings have also been issued due to heavy rains.

Local authorities began assessing the damage caused by the earthquake after receiving reports of collapsing buildings.
