Tokyo: Japan’s Ishikawa Prefecture was on Saturday on a high alert for aftershocks and rain following a 6.5-magnitude earthquake on Friday. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned that after the initial tremor on Friday afternoon, there could be more aftershocks over a period of about a week. The earthquake was recorded above 6 on the Japanese Richter scale in the city of Suzu on the Noto Peninsula. Friday’s earthquake in Suzu killed a 65-year-old man and injured 22 others after falling from a ladder.
As of 8 a.m. local time, more than 50 earthquakes have been recorded in the region, including a 5.8-magnitude quake on Friday evening. The weather agency said the province could receive up to 30 mm of rain per hour from Saturday evening to early Sunday, while up to 120 mm of rain is expected in the Noto region in the 24 hours to 6 am Sunday. Landslide warnings have also been issued due to heavy rains. Local authorities began assessing the damage caused by the earthquake after receiving reports of collapsing buildings.
