The report says that on May 25, Swedish Ambassador Malena Mard was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry. He was told that from September 1, “in view of the confrontational course followed by Sweden”, the Swedish Consulate General in St. Petersburg, as well as the Russian Consulate General in Gothenburg, will be closed.
In addition, five Swedish diplomats, including three employees of the Defense Attaché of the Swedish Embassy in Moscow, were recognized as persona non grata.
The Foreign Office noted that the move was a response to “an openly hostile move by Stockholm” – the decision to expel five Russian diplomats. “These actions by the Swedish authorities have further aggravated the situation of bilateral relations, which have reached an unprecedented level, in particular due to the ongoing Russophobic campaign in Sweden,” the agency said.
