What do we know about the rescue of children injured in a plane crash?

Soldiers transport young children aboard a military helicopter from the thickets of the Colombian night jungle. The news, which almost no one believed. Despite the middle of the night, Colombian President Gustavo Petro reports personally.

“The indigenous communities involved in the search, together with the Colombian army, found four children after 40 days. They were alone. They achieved exemplary survival. This will go down in history,” said Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

On May 1, the children, accompanied by their mother, flew to the Colombian town of San José del Guaviere, where their father was waiting for them. But during the flight, the Tsesna’s engine failed. The car crashed near the Apopalis River. Rescuers only found the broken fuselage after 370 hours.

Under the rubble, they found the bodies of the pilot and six other passengers, among whom was the mother of the children. Rescuers did not find them. After that, the Colombian president announced the start of a large-scale search operation. The group included military personnel, rescuers, volunteers, and representatives of native Indian tribes from across the country.

“Today we, the indigenous people of Colombia, are gathering with the security forces and leaving. We hope that our jungle and our Mother Earth will allow us to find our children,” said tribal leader Jovani Yule.

The search operation was complicated by constant hurricanes and other terrain features. This jungle is Colombia’s largest national park. Many wild animals live there – jaguars, cougars and large birds of prey – harpies, for which children could become easy prey.

“The hardest part is the lack of more specific or specific survival evidence or something that tells us they’re alive or in an area,” said Army Sgt. in the Huang Carlos Rojas research area.

During the research, the military even used new methods for themselves. Colombian special forces dropped hundreds of survival kits filled with food, water and basic necessities from helicopters above the jungle in the hope that children would fall on them.

The search engines even asked the grandmother of these children for help. She recorded a voicemail for her grandchildren, where she asked them to be persistent, to stay put and confident that they would come for them. His rescuers broadcast over the loudspeaker.

After some time, the military came across a bottle, which belonged to the youngest of the missing – an eleven-month-old girl. And on May 17, a hut was found in the jungle, in which, presumably, children lived. The president of Colombia was so happy with this news that he decided to announce the success of the operation. But it soon became clear that there were no children there and never had been.

But today the Indians have found another hut. There were children in it. Severely dehydrated, covered in blisters from insect bites. They were only able to survive due to the fact that their entire family is from the local Vitoto Indian tribe, who just live in this jungle.

“Despite the fact that the jungle is an inhospitable environment, you can still find food and shelter there. The children also belong to an indigenous ethnic group, which made it easier for them to adapt and survive in the jungle”, – the head of the Colombian special operations command, Pedro Sanchez.

This miraculous rescue story is set against the backdrop of prolonged anti-government protests and violent clashes between protesters and police over the government’s decision to raise taxes. The country is experiencing a financial crisis that began during the pandemic. And the news of the children who survived in the jungle, which has spread around the world, is seen in Colombia as a symbol of future changes for the better.

“My daughter will be 15 tomorrow, so this is a great gift for her, a great gift for all of Colombia,” said Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

Now the children are in Bogota, where they were taken at night on a military plane. There they will be attended by doctors and provide all necessary assistance.
