Russia’s Defense Ministry said Saturday that its air defense forces intercepted and destroyed 67 Ukrainian drones in a sweeping two-hour aerial assault that targeted multiple Russian regions, including areas near Moscow and strategic territories along the Black Sea.

The ministry said the attacks took place between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Moscow time on May 16, describing the barrage as one of the most geographically widespread Ukrainian drone operations reported in recent weeks.

According to the Russian military, the drones were intercepted over the Belgorod, Kursk, Bryansk, Oryol, Voronezh, Rostov, Kaluga, Tula, and Moscow regions, as well as over Krasnodar Territory and sections of the Black Sea.

Russian officials did not immediately report fatalities or major infrastructure damage, though regional authorities in several areas issued temporary drone alerts and aviation warnings during the attacks.

The latest wave of interceptions comes as the war between Russia and Ukraine increasingly shifts toward large-scale drone warfare, with both sides launching deeper and more coordinated strikes far beyond the traditional front lines.

Over the past several months, Ukrainian drone operations have expanded dramatically in range and frequency, targeting Russian oil facilities, military production plants, logistics hubs, and radar systems. Russian authorities have repeatedly accused Kyiv of escalating attacks against civilian areas and targeting Russian civilians with drone attacks.

The scale of the reported operation underscores how modern conflicts are increasingly dominated by drone swarms, electronic warfare, and long-range unmanned strike systems designed to overwhelm layered air defenses.

Recent military assessments indicate that both Russia and Ukraine are deploying record numbers of drones in saturation-style attacks intended to exhaust defensive systems and disrupt strategic infrastructure. Analysts say the conflict is rapidly evolving into one of the world’s first full-scale industrial drone wars built around low-cost unmanned aircraft and relentless aerial attrition campaigns.

The Kremlin has steadily strengthened its air defense systems around Moscow and other strategic regions following repeated Ukrainian incursions deep into Russian territory. Earlier this month, Russian officials said dozens of Moscow-bound drones were intercepted ahead of Victory Day commemorations.

Ukraine has increasingly relied on domestically produced drones as part of its broader strategy to target Russian logistics hubs, ammunition depots, and energy infrastructure. Ukrainian officials argue that long-range drone operations are aimed at weakening Russia’s military supply chain and disrupting wartime production capacity.

The escalation has coincided with mounting concerns across Europe over the widening scope of aerial warfare near NATO borders. Earlier this week, reports emerged of another daytime assault involving hundreds of drones targeting Ukrainian infrastructure facilities.

Russian authorities have meanwhile pointed to what they describe as an unprecedented surge in cross-border attacks. Earlier this month, Moscow accused Kyiv of launching 6,331 drone strikes within 24 hours during a period of collapsing ceasefire tensions.

The border regions of Bryansk, Belgorod, and Kursk have remained particularly vulnerable to repeated aerial incursions and artillery attacks. In March, a Bryansk missile strike reportedly killed civilians and intensified fears of deeper cross-border escalation.

Russia has also claimed growing success in countering what officials describe as Ukraine’s largest aerial attack campaigns since the war began. Earlier this month, Russian forces said they intercepted 117 Ukrainian drones in a massive overnight air defense barrage spanning several regions.

Despite periodic diplomatic efforts and renewed ceasefire discussions, the pace of aerial escalation continues to intensify. Military analysts warn that the Russia-Ukraine war is entering a dangerous new phase in which drone warfare, energy infrastructure sabotage, and continuous long-range attacks could increasingly define the conflict more than conventional battlefield offensives.
