The moon is working against stargazers again tonight. Four to five days past the Sturgeon Full Moon that peaked on August 7 to 8, the Waning Gibbous is still bright enough to wash out faint sky objects – but for anyone who simply wants to look up, it remains one of the more rewarding sights in the summer sky.

On August 12, 2026, the moon is in the Waning Gibbous phase, approximately 82 to 87 percent illuminated. That figure is a few points lower than yesterday’s Waning Gibbous, which registered 88 to 92 percent. The change is subtle to the naked eye – a slight flattening on one edge – but the direction is clear: the moon is heading toward its Last Quarter, expected around August 14 to 15, when exactly half the disc will be illuminated. The New Moon follows on approximately August 22 to 23, when the lunar cycle resets.

Tonight the moon rises before sunset across most of the northern hemisphere and climbs into a usable position well before midnight. It will remain high in the sky through the early morning hours before setting around mid-morning. The brightness is sufficient to cast faint shadows on open ground and will substantially reduce the contrast available for deep-sky observation. Observers targeting galaxies, nebulae, or the fainter Perseid meteors, whose annual peak falls around August 11 to 13, will find the Waning Gibbous their primary obstacle this week.

The Perseid meteor shower – produced by Earth passing through debris left by Comet Swift-Tuttle – runs from late July through late August each year, with peak rates typically reaching 50 to 100 meteors per hour under ideal dark-sky conditions. August 12 falls near or at the peak. The Waning Gibbous moon does not eliminate the show, but it suppresses the faint trail count considerably. Observers in very dark rural locations may still catch the brightest Perseids, which occasionally reach fireball brightness and leave visible trails. The shower produces enough bright events that the moon does not entirely foreclose the experience.

The name Waning Gibbous describes the moon’s current position in its 29.5-day orbit of Earth. “Gibbous” derives from the Latin for hump – denoting a moon that is more than half illuminated but short of full. “Waning” means the lit fraction is shrinking, as opposed to the Waxing Gibbous that precedes each Full Moon. The Sturgeon Moon, the traditional name applied to the August Full Moon by Algonquin peoples of North America, marked the time of year when lake sturgeon were easiest to net in the Great Lakes. NASA formally recognizes these names alongside astronomical designations. The August Full Moon also carries the names Green Corn Moon, Grain Moon, and Red Moon across different Indigenous and European folk traditions.

What you see tonight is reflected sunlight. The moon produces none of its own light – the bright disc is the sun’s energy bouncing off a surface composed largely of regolith, a layer of rock and dust created over billions of years of meteorite impacts. As the moon orbits Earth, the angle between the three bodies changes continuously. Past the Full Moon, progressively less of the sunlit hemisphere turns toward Earth, producing the nightly decrease in illumination that defines the waning phases. The process is precise enough that astronomers can calculate the exact illumination percentage for any moment in history or the future to within a fraction of a percent. The “approximately 82 to 87 percent” range cited here accounts for the difference in illumination between the start and end of August 12 across global time zones.

The NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has been mapping the moon’s surface from a polar orbit since 2009, tracks topography, mineral composition, and potential water ice deposits regardless of lunar phase. Earth-based observers, however, find that the Waning Gibbous is not the best phase for studying surface detail. The nearly full illumination flattens shadows across crater rims and valley walls. The most visually informative period for amateur telescopic lunar observation is the days immediately surrounding First and Last Quarter, when the terminator – the line between the sunlit and dark halves – runs through the disc and creates dramatic shadow-and-relief across surface features.

Tonight represents one of the last nights this cycle when the moon is bright enough to be a genuine nuisance for astrophotographers and a genuine spectacle for everyone else. The Last Quarter on August 14 to 15 marks the transition: after that, the moon rises later each night, leaves the evening sky progressively darker, and eventually gives way to the New Moon on August 22 to 23. That New Moon will begin the waxing cycle that produces September’s Harvest Moon – the Full Moon closest to the autumnal equinox – expected in the first week of September.

For the three nights running, the Waning Gibbous has been the brightest object in the sky after sunset. Tonight will be much the same. Look east after dark. You will not have to look hard.
